Subj: Necchi sewing machine disasters Date: 98-10-25 13:29:15 EST From: Amy Hello-- I read your site about the "extra" Singer and Necchi sewing machines that are always for sale. While I am ashamed to admit this, I was fooled as well. I hope my story will keep someone else from falling victim to the same fate. I thought I was making an informed decision when I went to the motel where the sale was being held. I knew the cheap teaser model was probably a bait and switch, but I didn't really go to purchase that one anyway. I watched the demonstration carefully, went back to the site twice to listen and learn, I test drove the machine, and was pleased that it would meet my needs at a price I was willing to pay. It did wonderful things, such as sewing over great thicknesses, would "serge", and was able to go from one fabric to another without missing a stitch or changing the tension. We were told that there was a 100% satisfaction guarantee on the machine, and that they would refund the money if we were not satisfied, which they did not stand behind. We were promised extensive material on machine use in addition to the instruction manual, which we never received. We were told that the company had a help line, and would be able to solve many problems over the phone, should they come up, but they were condescending and rude. Having sewn prolifically for over 30 years, owned 6 machines and operated over a hundred as an instructor, I felt very comfortable with the machine after using it, so I bought a somewhat beefed up model. When I got the machine home, it NEVER worked properly, right from the start. I tried everything I knew to do, and still no luck. I called T & R Distributing in Nebraska, who had sold it to me. They were rude and insulting, insisting that it was my problem, and that I did not know how to operate the machine. I was told to send it back (on my nickel) and they would look at it. I called the company in Denver from whom T & R gets their machines. They were more helpful, but nothing they told me to try worked. I made samples of all the problems, and sent it to them. After many weeks, they called and said there was nothing wrong with the machine, and that it worked beautifully. They began to get a bit testy when I said that I did not want it back, and wanted a new one. I contacted my credit card company, who assisted me in halting the payment until the issue was resolved. Sadly, the receipt said no refunds, and although there were several witnesses besides myself who heard the salesman say multiple times that they would refund money if you were not happy with the product, I still own a piece of total junk. It has never had good tension, it is very loud and makes an annoying banging noise when it is in operation. It will not sew over layers of fabrics like the sample machine did. While I should have been smarter, they should have been honest. I'm glad there is someone out there who had a good experience, but believe me, I will never make this mistake again. ---Suckered in Colorado---
