Finding out more about a specific model

Perhaps one of the most difficult questions to answer is "What about the model X?" Most of us simply don't have the time to keep upon all the special features and operating performance of individual machines. While I have a couple of different sewing machines myself, unless you're in the market for a 1965 Kenmore, I'm not going to be able to give you specific info on that model on sale at your local shop.

Here are some tips on locating more information about individual models.

If you are looking for a manual try Debbie's list of online sources and offline manufacturers contact phone numbers.

Search the usenet archives. Someone may have already asked about that model last week or last month, or last summer. Try any of these locations, using the brand name and model number of the machine you want info on. If the search service offers it, limit your search to the relevant newsgroup -- rec.crafts.textiles.sewing or alt.sewing.

Infoseek Guide

Ask on a relevant newsgroup, rec.crafts.textiles.sewing or alt.sewing. Try to pose the question so that you get a useful response. "Which machine is best?" will probably not get you much help, since, as these pages point out, choosing a "best" machine is an individual decision. If you have narrowed your options to two or three choices, asking about those models will probably stimulate some discussion among folks who had to make the same choice. Try to ask specific questions about stitch quality, ease of use, or repair problems. This way you avoid getting "Well, I like it" as an answer.

To my knowledge there has not been a recent review of sewing machines by Consumer Reports magazine.
