A note from Dawn
Libraries, Dollhouses and Wargames:
the rest of the DawnPages. On Climbing Trees, For Louisa May Alcott
In first grade the sun poured
onto the rough paper
flecked with embedded
slivers of pine
The teacher bent
over our desks, told us to make
three dots in a vertical row,
guides to keep
our letters on the right lines.
She walked around the room.
My dots grew, my pencil drew
spirals, vines, twining
until she stopped at my desk
and said to erase
all that. She would tell us
what to do next.
