Make Your Own Sidewalk Chalk

What You Need:

1 cup of plaster of Paris
1/2 cup of cold water
flexible candy mold
tempera paint or other water-based poster paint

Combine plaster of Paris, water and paint in a mixing bowl. Stir until everything is well mixed. Pour a little bit of the mixture into each section of the candy molds and let dry completely. Overnight is probably good. When it no longer feels damp to the touch, you can pop the chalk out of the mold and let the kids go wild!

I'd like to see someone experiment with pouring the mix into penny wrappers, to see if it will make chalk sticks...

I have not used penny wrappers but am going to try it to see how it works. What I have used is hollowed out egg shells and dixi kitchen cups. Both of these make "chunks" which are easy for little hands to hold and they also do not break as easy. Another thing I have used as a mold is an old microwave hotdog cooker which has 6 indentations for hot dogs which make pretty good chalk sticks. I do spray this with a veg. oil first for easy removal.

From Pam:

Have you ever tried making it in toilet paper tubes? That's what we do at school. It makes nice big pieces. And you can tear off the cardboard and throw it away.

Emily says:

How about trying to use popsicle moulds. They probably would work really well.

My recipe from another is 2c water, 2c plaster of paris and 2 T tempra paint (wet or dry). I pour mine into jello jiggler easter egg molds. Or pour them into toilet paper tubes that have been sealed at one end with duct tape. I did this as a language project with preschoolers I worked with as a speech therapist.
